The Afghan migrant who stabbed a two-year-old boy and a passerby to death in a German park was supposed to have left the country.
The knifeman, aged 28, ambushed a nursery group and killed the boy of Moroccan descent as well as the 41-year-old German man who tried to protect the children in Schoental Park, in the Bavarian town of Aschaffenburg at around 11.45am.
According to Spiegel, the perpetrator is a male asylum seeker called Enamullah O. who reportedly lives in an asylum accommodation in the region and is said to have mental problems.
Enamullah O. came to Germany in November 2022, but was not granted asylum and announced on December 4, 2024, that he would voluntary leave the country, tabloid Bild reports.
'As a result, on December 11, the [ministry for immigration and asylum] finally closed the asylum procedure and asked the person concerned to leave the country,' Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann told a press conference.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Wednesday he would demand to know why the Afghan suspect in a deadly knife attack had been able to stay in the country.
'The authorities must explain as quickly as possible why the attacker was even still in Germany,' Scholz said in a statement reacting to the devastating attack.
The knifeman was arrested near the scene and the kitchen knife allegedly used in the attack has been seized.

A 15-year-old boy has been charged with terror offences relating to extreme Islamist ideology.
The teenager, from Southampton, is charged with three counts of having a document or record of information likely to be useful to a person preparing an act of terrorism.
He is also accused of three counts of encouraging terrorism, Counter Terrorism Policing South East said.
The boy was charged on Monday and released on bail.
He will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on January 29.

Fury is growing over the alleged bashing of a lifeguard at a suburban pool in Melbourne, building pressure for Trump-style deportations of foreign criminals.

A lifeguard at a public swimming pool in Melbourne has been brutally beaten by a gang of Afghan teenagers in a shocking attack in front of families and children.
The 19-year-old was attacked while on duty at Casey Aquatic and Recreation Centre in Narre Warren just before 6pm on Saturday evening, leaving him requiring hospital treatment for upper body injuries.
The large group of male youths set upon the lifeguard after he told one of them to stop doing flips into the pool dangerous close to other swimmers, including children, Nine News reported.
He was then headbutted, kicked and punched, leaving his lifeguard uniform splattered with blood. The group of at least nine then fled the scene and are still on the run.
Locals said the attackers were teenagers of Afghani background who were known for making trouble in the area.

Eyewitness Heard Gunshots During Momika’s Live Execution
New details have emerged from Salwan Momika’s assassination, including an eyewitness account from a viewer who watched his final live stream.
More than 2,000 people were watching when Momika was shot.
A viewer, Linda, described hearing someone scream, followed by four gunshots.
Monika had previously acknowledged he was a target, referencing a Lebanese medium who predicted his death in 2024.
He funded his activism through social media, earning money from TikTok gifts, paid X (Twitter) subscriptions, and cryptocurrency donations.
TikTok repeatedly banned his accounts, but he continued creating new ones to broadcast his message.
